Palm tree lined on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other, this is Scripps Park in La Jolla Cove, a San Diego California cityscape by RD Riccoboni. La Jolla Cove is a very small beach, tucked between adjacent sandstone cliffs. Due to its extraordinary beauty and breathtaking ocean views La Jolla Cove is one of the most photographed beaches in Southern California. It is within a short walk of the commercial area of the community of La Jolla, but retains a character "all its own." This is the park above the beach. I have painted this area many times. The large pink Spanish Colonial structure in the background is the La Valencia Hotel. The historic and elegant hotel, built in 1926 is the Place to stay in La Jolla. With such epic oceanic surroundings, you’ll understand how this small inn became the town’s social nexus, but don’t let this reputation imply that the hotel doesn’t offer privacy. Many of Hollywood’s biggest stars, including Greta Garbo and John Gilbert, Ramon Navarro, Chaplin and Groucho Marx, the Talmadge sisters, Lillian Gish and Mary Pickford, have retreated to La Valencia to escape the glare of stardom’s spotlight. Little has changed at the hotel since it opened in 1926, save the construction of the lavish gold-and-blue-domed tower, which was utilized as a civil defense lookout during World War II.
